Why buy a Mini PC with Ryzen R5 Pro 2400GE?

PC buyers may have come across listings of the HP Elitedesk 705 G4 Mini Desktop PC with a Ryzen 5 Pro 2400GE cpu. The first question on their mind is the question of how the AMD processor compares with the Intel counterpart.

First, let’s look at the HP Elitedesk 705 G4 Mini Desktop PC. This is the premium version of the AMD series of the HP G4 Mini or DM series. The budget version is the HP Prodesk 405 G4 Mini or DM. The G4 Mini series use the DDR4-2666 Mhz RAM. The equivalent premium Intel series is the HP Elitedesk 800 G4 Mini. At the lower end is the HP Prodesk 400 G4 DM and the Prodesk 600 G4 Mini. Similarly these Mini Desktop PCs use the DDR4-2666Mhz RAM.

The AMD Ryzen R5 Pro 2400GE is somewhat equivalent to Intel’s i5-8400t or i5-8500t. In comparison, the Ryzen is only a 4 core processor compared with 6 cores for the Intel counterparts. Thus it is slower in terms of raw computing speed viz a viz the Intel processor. However it differs from Intel in that the Ryzen supports hyper-threading whereas the i5-8400t and i5-8500t does not. Thus in applications which uses hyper-threading, the Ryzen excels.

However the most significant difference is that the Ryzen R5 Pro 2400GE has an integrated graphics processor in the form of the Radeon RX Vega 11. You may at this stage point out that the i5-8400t and i5-8500t also have integrated Intel UHD 630 processor built in. The difference though is major, like night and day. The AMD processor is like having a low end discrete graphics card somewhat comparable to the Nvidia GT1030 built into the Ryzen processor. Thus you can play some PC games such as CS-Go or DOTA 2 with reasonable resolution of 1080p. This is something you definitely cannot do with the Intel processors without a separate discrete graphics card. Thus with the Ryzen, you can run versions of Autocad as well as photo and video editing software to a reasonably good degree. Again not possible with the Intel counterparts.

What makes it extra special is that all these features come in a mini desktop pc package with a 65W power adapter. If you have to purchase a desktop pc with a discrete graphics card, you will need a small form factor or tower desktop pc. With such a configuration, probably your pc will need to have at least a 300W power supply if not higher. When you add up the costs including the separate graphics card, the amount will be significant. However with the Ryzen 5 Pro 2400GE, you only need to pay around the price of a mini desktop pc with an intel i5-8400t or i5-8500t, a substantial cost saving.
