Business Class PCs with Intel 9th generation CPUs

Similar to earlier generations of Intel CPUs in business class PCs, the three major manufacturers of business class desktop PCs all have offerings for the 9th generation. Lenovo’s M720q and M920q Tiny are both capable of installing the 9th generation Intel CPUs as well as the earlier 8th generation. For Lenovo, the M920q Tiny is a more advanced version than the M720q Tiny. All the Lenovo Tiny PCs in this range only takes in the suffix t version of the Intel 9th generation CPUs eg i5-9500t. Thus these PCs all come with 65W power adapters. The i9-9900t is officially not compatible with Lenovo M720q and M920q. The Lenovo PCs here come with only 1 M.2 NVME SSD slot in addition to a 2.5in caddy for SSD or HDD.

Dell as usual has the 3 tier offerings in the business class micro PCs ranging from 3070m, 5070m and 7070m. The basic 3070 micro only accepts the t version of the Intel 8th and 9th generation CPUs and comes with 65W power adapter, like Lenovo. However the specs for the Dell 5070 micro states a power supply requirement of 4.62A which translates to a 90W power adapter. Thus the Dell 5070 micro can accept 65W Intel CPUs like i5-9500 and i7-9700. This is in addition to those with t suffixes as well as Intel’s 8th generation CPUs such as i7-8700 and those with t suffixes.

There seems to be 2 versions of the Dell 7070 micro with one having a current rating of 4.62A and another with a current rating of 6.7A, thereby requiring a 90W and 130W power adapter respectively. Hence obviously the 7070 micro accepts all CPUs that the 5070 does and more by allowing for the i9-9900 and the i9-9900t to be installed. All the Dell micro PCs here have a maximum RAM size of 32GB with a 16GB in each of the 2 RAM slots. The RAMs run at 2666Mhz except for i3 CPUs and below where it will run at 2400Mhz. Unfortunately the Dell PCs in this lineup come with only 1 M.2 NVME SSD slot in addition to a 2.5in caddy for SSD or HDD.

On the HP front, the usual 3 tier options are also available, with HP Prodesk 400 G5, Prodesk 600 G5 and the HP Elitedesk 800 G5 all minis in the business classs range. The Prodesk 400 and 600 G5 Minis only accepts the Intel 8th and 9th generation CPUs with suffix t, since both come with 65W power adapter. On the other hand, the HP Elitedesk comes with a 90W power adapter and thus able to accept Intel 8th and 9th generation CPUs without suffix t eg i5-9500 and i7-9700. Unfortunately the i9-9900 or i9 9900t is not officially compatible with the HP Elitedesk 800 G5 Mini.

HP Elitedesk 800 G5 Mini

The HP Prodesk 400 G5 mini only has a single M.2 NVME SSD slot whereas the Prodesk 600 and Elitedesk 800 each has 2. By default, all the PCs in HP G5 Mini series do not come with sata cable, 2.5in caddy and fan assembly. However one can easily purchase it separately if a 2.5in SSD or HDD is to be installed.
